And it isn't, as the increased length reduces the squareness. The styling is considerably improved. Plastic surgery on the chin has made a huge difference, and the other edges and angles are much softer, making the xB more attractive and less funny looking. Believe it or not, the Scion xB sort of has the limo look going for it. Maybe even a gangster look, like a sedan from the '20s. The interior feels as changed as the exterior looks. There might have been a big loss in front seat legroom, but the driver still has a commanding view of the road. That's exceptional if not unique, for a car of this size. The short nose, big windshield, elevatable driver's seat, and far-away dashboard create this feel. The 2.4-liter engine borrowed from the sporty Scion tC might not move the xB out of econobox territory, but it certainly powers the xB to the front of the field. Just think, all you owners of 2004-2007 xBs: 50 percent more horsepower. The all-new Scion xB is very different than the previous model. It's longer, wider, faster, and less quirky looking. It offers some fine features, including a good fabric interior and 60/40 rear seats that easily fold flat, creating an excellent cargo compartment behind the front seats. The all-new 2008 Scion xB keeps the boxy shape of the former model, but its edges become a little softer and it's a size larger overall. Length is up by about a foot, width by three inches, and wheelbase by four inches.

To handle the larger size and weight of the new xB, a larger 2.4L four-cylinder engine is standard. The engine, which is used throughout much of the Toyota model lineup and has variable valve timing, makes 158 horsepower and is paired with either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. All xBs have front-wheel drive.

The xB promises a good, well-controlled ride combined with responsive, nimble handling. Brakes are especially notable; four-wheel anti-lock discs, with ventilated discs in front, are standard. Safety is also a strongpoint; stability control, front seat-mounted side air bags, and side curtain bags are all standard.

The interior offers a surprisingly roomy back seat good for two adults, or three in a pinch. They're split 60/40 and can fold flat to expand the already large 21.7-cubic-foot space to handle larger loads. There's a "hidden" storage tray beneath the back seat for small items like laptops. In front there are several storage boxes and trays, a driver's armrest, and the front seats can fully recline. A multi-information display with trip computer functions is included, along with orange-lit gauges.

The standard 160-watt Pioneer audio system features MP3 and WMA compatibility, digital media player connectivity, and a mini-jack input. It is also one of the few units that displays the device's track, artist, and album information. In addition, it includes steering-wheel audio controls. A premium audio system is available as a dealer-installed accessory, and it brings an electroluminescent screen that has customizable "skins" and can play short video clips and images.
