The 2008 MINI Cooper coupe, fresh off of a complete redesign for 2007, uses a punchy all-aluminum inline-four that is rated at 118 horsepower in normally aspirated form and 172 horsepower with the turbocharger. Fully variable valve lift and timing help deliver that power in an extremely smooth fashion, and also benefits fuel economy. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, while an automatic with the same number of gear ratios and Steptronic paddles is optional on both the Cooper and Cooper S.
Handling on the Cooper is tight, courtesy of a rear suspension setup that uses aluminum longitudinal shafts. A standard Sport Button allows the driver to opt for improved acceleration, increased steering response, and swifter gear changes when paired with the automatic transmission.
Visually, MINI offers thousands of color combinations coordinating body color, roof color, and colorline interior trim.
The list of options is seemingly endless. Notable items include Keyless Go entry, universal mobile phone prep, and park distance control. Heated seats, a navigation system, xenon headlights, a stiffer suspension, Sirius satellite and HD radio, and a plethora of alloy wheels are also available. If that isn't enough, MINI has a prolific aftermarket and dealer-supported accessories industry to further customization.
All MINIs come standard with six air bags, anti-lock disc brakes, cornering brake control, electronic brakeforce distribution, and daytime running lamps.
MINI has managed to keep the base prices equal to 2007 with slight increases to some optional equipment. The Cooper starts at $18,050, while the Cooper S lists for $21,200.
